Kazou Hirai announced to step down as Sony President and CEO

What’s Up PlayStation Nation,

Today provides some bittersweet news In a surprising turn of events it has been reported via press release of PlayStation’s recent finacial report  that the PlayStation 4 sales has reached 76.5 million sales, alongside that Kaz Harai has announced he will be stepping down as CEO of Sony Corporation. Sony has announced that Kenichiro Yoshida will assume Kaz’s soon to be former role and will be taking over as of April 1st, 2018. Even though Kaz will be stepping down as CEO, Mr. Hirai will remain in the company, retaining the Director and Chairman roles once April hits.

As it has been detailed in an official press statement Kaz Harai and Kenichiro provided statements to the recent news which is detailed below:

Kazou Harai States:

“Ever since my appointment as President and CEO in April 2012, I have stated that my mission is to ensure Sony continues to be a company that provides customers with kando – to move them emotionally – and inspires and fulfills their curiosity. To this end, I have dedicated myself to transforming the company and enhancing its profitability, and am very proud that now, in the third and final year of our current mid-range corporate plan, we are expecting to exceed our financial targets. And it excites me to hear more and more people enthuse that Sony is back again. As the company approaches a crucial juncture, when we will embark on a new mid-range plan, I consider this to be the ideal time to pass the baton of leadership to new management, for the future of Sony and also for myself to embark on a new chapter in my life. My successor, Kenichiro Yoshida, has supported me closely since returning to Sony in December 2013 , contributing extensively beyond his remit as CFO and acting as valuable confidant and business partner, as we took on the challenge of transforming Sony together. Mr. Yoshida combines a deeply strategic mindset with a relentless determination to achieve defined targets, and the ability to take a global viewpoint. I believe he possesses the breadth of experience and perspective, as well as the unwavering leadership qualities required to manage Sony’s diverse array of businesses, and as such is the ideal person to drive the company forward into the future. As Chairman, I will of course offer my full support to Mr. Yoshida and the new management team, and do all I can to facilitate a smooth transition and ensure their future success.”

Kenichiro Yoshida States:

“I am very grateful to Kazuo Hirai and the Sony Board for their trust and confidence in appointing me as Sony President and CEO, and at the same time feel a great sense of responsibility in taking on this vitally important role. Together with the outstanding talent we have across the Sony Group, I will aim to build on the business foundations established by Mr. Hirai, and execute further reform measures that enhance our competitiveness as a global enterprise, and enable us to realize long-term profit growth. My first priority will be to finalize our next mid-range corporate plan starting in April, together with our immediate business plan for the fiscal year 2018, and then move ahead swiftly with implementation. This is a hugely exciting time at Sony as we look to our future, and together with my management team I intend to determine the best path for us to move forward, and devote my full effort to creating a better Sony that captures the imagination of our many stakeholders around the world.”

(Editors Opinion: This is definitely unexpected news as it has caught me off guard in terms of expected news. However it does make sense as such a high level position can be tiring considering that he has to travel on the constant and stay away from family. Not only that he has maintain and manage many branches of the Sony Corp. Which he has done a great job at. However it does leave many fans of the brand a bit worried and questioning will the transitioning team be able to maintain the same level of quality that many of us PlayStation fans have come to love. Not only that it leaves the question of will we experience a shift in gaming output. One can only hope that things will continue to prosper and grow. Kazou Harai is one of many parts that are responsible for turning around the perception of the PlayStation brand. But we will see how this is will manifest going into the PS5 and so forth. Does it worry fans who closely follow the PlayStation Brand? I believe it does. But we will see how things will evolve over time. We look forward to see how the PlayStation name will evolve going forward.)

PlayStation & Sun-Soft Announce Dark Eclipse A Virtual Reality MOBA

What’s Up PlayStation Nation,

PlayStation is looking to innovate with a new Sun-Soft Developed VR MOBA title that goes by the name Dark Eclipse. The title is set to launch in “Spring 2018” but if you’re in attendance at PlayStation Experience, you’ll be able to play the first demo for the game at the Anaheim event.

Multiplayer Online Battle Arena — or MOBA are looking to evolve. PlayStation has it’s fair share of great titles such as paragon and many others but the devs at Sun-Soft have stated that they want to bring the MOBA genre to VR. As they’ve played many  MOBA titles. As reported via the PS Blog Check out the details on this title and what they have to say  below:

Sunsoft wants to bring MOBA into the era of virtual reality. We play lots of MOBA games. The thrill of getting a triple-kill, diving under the tower to chase a kill, ganking an unsuspecting opponent, getting that power buff, pushing towers towards the enemy base, receiving cheers from spectators… we want to bring all of this to VR.

This is a game where you need to react to other players — there is no surefire winning strategy, so you need to adapt to each situation. The pace of the game allows you to think strategically in terms of when to attack or defense. Know your enemy, and know yourself. Play wisely.

When we were thinking of player interaction in VR, the first thing we tried was point-and-click and point-and-teleport interactions. While that did work, we were left thinking “What if the interaction was more like real life, where you can just grab things with your hands?”

Unlike VR shooting games, in Dark Eclipse you don’t extend your arms to aim. The game is paced so that you can move more casually. We also designed the game with a rest period between matches, so you can rest your body if needed.

Dark Eclipse is designed to be a competitive game. Like all great MOBAs before it, we are looking forward to seeing skilled players battle opponents who match their skill level, eventually filtering out the top players so we can all watch their godlike gameplay. For that, we will have rank mode in Season 1.

If you are just looking to have some fun, you should know that at first nobody will know the game enough to compete in rank mode, so the launch period will be like “season zero.” So relax, have fun, and enjoy the casual mode at launch.

There are tutorials and a practice mode in Dark Eclipse. We will have a mode for player vs A.I. bots, so you can practice until you are comfortable to play with other live users. There will be rewards as you gain more experience. Rewards you earn will carry forward regardless of solo, casual mode or rank mode.

While traditional MOBA usually requires rapid control of the keyboard and mouse (or touchscreen), in VR, players have motion controllers which allow analog movement input. In Dark Eclipse, you can play with one or two PlayStation Move controllers, or with a DualShock 4, or a combination of both.

Dark Eclipse for PS VR

We have a range of over twenty characters planned for the game at launch, split between human-like characters called Heroes and monster-like characters called Dominators.

When we started playtesting Dark Eclipse in VR, we experimented with having one player controlling up to five characters. We eventually settled down to three controllable characters (leaders) per player because it felt good. The three controllable characters made leader composition an essential consideration, even you’re playing solo.

Because of the large combination of characters to choose from, we are aiming for Dark Eclipse to provide around a thousand hours of gameplay, with matches lasting anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes each. Looking at the hours we’ve put into playtesting this game, this won’t be a difficult task. And it’s going to be fun.

What Lies Ahead

At launch we will focus on 1v1 gameplay, so winning or losing is entirely up to you. This will be the main focus until the competitive season starts. Later, we will move on to 2v2, and the dynamic of the game will start to require teamwork. Eventually, we want to reach 3v3 matches. We don’t want to jump into a situation where there are not enough players in-game at any given time, and we don’t want to have people waiting for a long time for a match.

In short, first claim victory with your own wit, then look forward to team gameplay in a major release after launch. We understand the excitement of a team-based dynamic — looking at MOBAs on mobile phones, it’s easy to get games with five players on each team. But is that the answer for VR MOBA? We are taking steps to find out. The multiplayer online battle experience we want doesn’t necessarily mean 5v5, especially when one player controls three characters. We will keep iterating and evolve the game.

Finally, it wouldn’t be eSports if there are no spectators. For that, we have been prototyping a spectator mode, which will be released in an update after launch.

(Editors Opinion: I’m not much of a fan of MOBA’s however I do like spectating them, Just not playing them unfortunately. However I truly appreciate the innovation that this title brings with combining the MOBA genre with VR elements and the art style for this title is amazing. Fans of VR and MOBA games should find this game to be very interesting and hopefully fun as well. And Though I am not into MOBA games, I will give this a try at PSX [if the line isn’t too long]. Either way this title looks great and ambitious as ever!)

What do you think? Are you interested in this upcoming VR MOBA? Do you think this is a good mix? We’d love to hear you guys and gals thoughts. For news like this and more make sure to keep us bookmarked and check back with us here at What’s Up PlayStation

For those attending the event, there will also be a signing session following the panel.

(Editors Opinion: Well I’ve never been a panel guy it mainly would depend on the game but each I’ve attended PSX I’ve found at least one Panel that grabs my attention last year it was the Horizon panel. This year it will probably be Uncharted Anniversary Celebration.  With Hopes to meet the great Nolan North! It would be nice for PlayStation and Naughty Dog to possibly hold a tournament of sorts for Uncharted during the anniversary for more serious players like myself and others who would more than likely be in attendance for PSX but one can only hope. Overall the panels seem pretty solid I will also be on the look out for the Sucker Punch Ghost of Tsushima Panel as I’m very eager to get my hands on this title! At any rate PSX is a great event to attend to get a taste of industry events like these on a not so crowded level in comparison to E3 so to speak.)

What do you think are you excited for PSX next week will you be in attendance at PSX? What panels are you looking forward to seeing? Lastly what events would you like to see included as a showcase at PSX? And with today’s news the wait will finally be over as I will double support this game in hopes of receiving other fighters like this stateside one can only hope we’ll get titles suck as melty blood and others on the PS4 before this generation is over. PlayStation announces changes ahead for PSX 2017?

What’s Up PlayStation Nation,

Well it’s only a few weeks away from greatness that is known as PSX. As you know many of us here at the What’s Up PlayStation team are going to be in attendance of PSX. And this year there will be more of us than usual alongside new members of the WUPS team being announced soon. With that being said on the announcement side of things. It has been announced via the PS Blog that things will be a bit different for PSX this year. Mainly for those fans who may not be in attendance of the event who usually look forward to a keynote event sadly it seems there will not be a keynote this year.

This year will be the first of the past PSX events to not have a key note presser for the event.  It has been reported that Early Bird ticket holders for PlayStation Experience will be granted access to an exclusive presentation at the Anaheim Convention Center the evening of Friday, December 8 starting at 8:00pm Pacific Time. There is said to be a few surprises and more however as far as the traditional keynote we all expect when it comes to PSX, it seems that will be absent this year in some capacity. However there will still continue to be the traditional panels to be streamed via the usual channels of Twitch and YouTube.

Edit: It seems that we have been updated via Sid Shuman which he has stated via the PS Blog. The keynote event will take place on Friday evening instead of Saturday. And this special event is only available to early bird ticket holders.

Key Note

This news may or may not be a bit disappointing. However it should be said that there will still be announcements via panels and exclusive hands on access to games at the event for those in attendance. However this is a definite change that will grasp the attention of many who have come to expect to see this event even when they are not in attendance.

With that being said the PSX show floor will also be open longer than usual.
